About The Golem

The Golem is a 1920 expressionist German horror film, co-directed by and starring Paul Wegener in the title role. In 16th-century Prague, a rabbi creates a giant creature, the Golem, from clay; using sorcery, the rabbi brings the Golem to life in order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution. In Jewish folklore, a golem is an autonomous being magically created from inanimate matter. The legend touches upon themes of control, creation, pride, and disastrous consequences.
